A study of Thai call center workers using the Rapid Office Strain Assessment (ROSA) found that 52.3% scored in the high-risk category for work-related musculoskeletal disorders. The ROSA tool evaluates chair height, armrest use, backrest angle, monitor position, phone use, and keyboard/mouse placement. The high-risk scores were driven primarily by phone/headset use patterns and the inability to vary working posture during calls.

Why This Order Matters

Call Break places stretching immediately after the seated block, before standing or walking. This is the reverse of most Crane profiles, and the reasoning is specific to headset workers. After 30 minutes of headset use, the neck and jaw muscles are in a state of sustained contracture. Moving directly to standing or walking would change the load on the lower body but leave the primary problem area, the cervical spine and jaw, unaddressed.

By stretching first, the profile targets the most symptomatic region while the worker is still in a controlled position. Neck stretches performed from a seated position allow more precise isolation of the suboccipital and upper trapezius muscles than the same stretches performed while standing, because the lower body remains stable and does not introduce compensatory movement patterns.

The 5-minute standing phase follows stretching and serves as a transition from seated to ambulatory activity. Standing reloads the postural muscles of the trunk and lower extremities, reactivates the venous pump in the calves, and begins to reverse the lumbar disc compression accumulated during the seated block.

Walking for 3 minutes raises heart rate slightly, increases systemic blood flow, and provides a mental reset from the demands of call handling. The final 2-minute exercise block targets the shoulder girdle and thoracic spine with brief strengthening movements such as wall push-ups, shoulder blade squeezes, or resistance band pulls, counteracting the rounded-shoulder posture that develops from reaching forward to type while wearing a headset.
